The cyber threat continues to grow, with a new survey stating that 80% of Australian organisations were hit with a ransomware attack in 2021.
Ransomware attacks can have devastating impacts on business, halting operations and potentially damaging an organisation’s reputation. With these types of attacks, hackers gain access to a company’s network or systems, detonating a malicious payload that is meant to exfiltrate data and/or shut down the network, demanding a ransom in order to regain access.
And those payouts can be a hefty price point that is out of reach for a lot of small businesses. The survey stated that the average ransom paid by Australian businesses was $226,863, with nearly half of those surveyed paying between $100,000 and $499,999.
Another startling statistic? 43% of organisations had to pay the ransom in order to get their data back, in part because they didn’t have the security infrastructure in place to recover from this type of attack.
Having regular backup processes and infrastructure in place are one of the best ways to prepare for ransomware attacks, so that should a hacker shut down your systems, you are able to recover that information and get back to business sooner, avoiding a costly ransom.
