Australia Considers Tougher Cybersecurity Laws, Following Optus Hack
Australian government officials are considering implementing strong cybersecurity requirements and protections following the recent hack of Optus, a major telecommunications company, that led to a breach of data for nearly 10 million customers.
Of those 10 million, 2.8 million had significant amounts of personal data stolen in the attack, including driver’s licence information and passport numbers.
While in many countries there are policies in place to levy massive fines against companies that have significant breaches as a deterrent, Australia’s current law doesn’t allow them to fine Optus for the hack. Instituting more rigorous standards and accountability measures for major industries and businesses have all been discussed following the breach.
